Providing Insight, Advice and Support for Operations, Maintenance and Reliability Improvements

The Alidade Way

Alidade was founded in 2004 to address a critical deficiency in delivering professional management, engineering and reliability services to industry, government and facility managers.

The critical deficiency was that consulting firms were driven too much by their own business goals, and not enough by their client’s goals.

What is the Alidade Way?
After experiencing other consulting firms from the inside and as a subcontractor, our president observed, first hand, the impact on clients from consulting firms that have the wrong focus. He recognized that the professional management, engineering & reliability services industry needed a new approach.

Alidade specializes in supporting our client’s goals; maximizing return on assets (ROA); minimizing working capital, driving out waste and maximizing labor effectiveness. We do this through a focus on establishing control & stability and then employing Proactive Reliability to identify and capitalize on opportunities.  Our staff delivers experienced and reliable coaching, facilitation, education and support - resulting in superior performance.

The Alidade Way is a business structure and philosophy that leverages the best attributes of  management, engineering & reliability professionals:

  • Their passion to solve problems
  • Their experience and interest in working in diverse settings
  • Their desire to see people develop and thrive

The Alidade Way works because we remove detractors and create an environment where our team members can focus on applying what they know.

The Alidade Business Model
The Alidade business model is based on a small group of full time professionals with virtual offices, supplemented with an extensive network of individual and small business management, engineering and reliability professionals. We have on staff, or will assemble the  resources to deliver what is needed, when it’s needed and at the pace it is needed.

If we meet or exceed what our clients request, with integrity, our clients will rely on us for future engagements.

Benefits to Our Clients

  • Professional,  motivated support
  • Focus on their specific goals and objectives
  • Project scopes that match resources and risk tolerance
  • Scaleability; without paying for non-value added overhead

Some clients already have a program in mind and simply need facilitation and coaching while others have complex requirements that would benefit from experienced professional insight, advice or support.

We welcome small projects which allow you to solve problems while getting to know the Alidade Way.  This also allows you to manage the inherent risk of working with a new service provider on larger projects. It’s ok, we get that; most of our staff and associates had leadership roles in business, operations,  engineering, maintenance and other positions.  We’ve been there.

Whether you need leadership development workshops, maintenance and reliability program assessment, facilitated Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), or a comprehensive maintenance or reliability program assessment, we stand ready to assist you.

  • The 3 Biggest Detractors to Quality Professional Services

The first detractor is  excessive focus on consulting cash flow.  Most large consulting firms have big staffs and thousands of square feet of office space.  This means they have a lot of overhead. Overhead requires larger firms to be constantly concerned about cash flow.  Consulting businesses manage cash flow by  keeping consultant utilization rates as high as possible; typically  80% or more annually.  In order to achieve utilization goals they focus on large scope, extended duration engagements. While large scope projects may be appropriate, the larger they are, the greater the project risk to the client;  in terms of on-time, on-budget completion, performance results, etc.  As a client you should be asking whether the project scope is in your best interest, or that of the service provider.

The second detractor is that consulting firms often present their flagship improvement model as the best one known to mankind.  They promote their model as a differentiator between them and their competitors.  The truth is, that just like most engineering projects, there are any number of methods that can and do achieve great  results. The most important thing is to be aligned with client objectives, constraints and resources. A professional services firm with quality team members can use their experience and knowledge to customize support.

The third detractor many consulting firms have is keeping their workforce professionally satisfied. Some professional services firms highlight the fact that all of their team members are full time employees. Large consulting firms typically have relatively high turnover of personnel. Having a rigid model requires the firm to train new staff to a uniform, set of procedures. The pressures to maintain cash flow ( > 80% utilization) and rigidness of delivery models reduce enthusiasm and creativity of experienced professionals. When experienced professionals perceive that they have little or no discretion regarding the use of their own experience and knowledge, their enthusiasm wanes and turnover increases.

Alidade provides the opportunity for professionals to do what they do best.
