Alidade MER, Inc.

Providing Insight, Advice and Support for Operations, Maintenance and Reliability Improvements

Philosophy

Alidade MER is a professional services firm motivated by performance improvement through professional, scalable services with an emphasis on leadership excellence.

In order to achieve performance potential  there must be an overarching philosophy.  The philosophy is a “North Star” that allows all efforts to be aligned with a common goal. The Alidade philosophy is represented in the Organizational Reliability Model shown below.

The Organizational Reliability Model provides a graphical representation that is easy to understand, and that allows us to execute strategic reliability projects and discrete reliability projects that are aligned with the model.

In addition, the model allows us to provide our staff, our partners and out clients with the important concepts while accommodating the unique attributes of each of our clients.    It is more important to customize a solution to a client’s realities than to force them into a “one size fits all” model.

Strategic Projects

Strategic reliability projects typically begin with an assessment to determine what is working and where there are opportunities to improve. The assessment is followed by an Action Planning Workshop to provide change management training for senior leadership, and to select the opportunities that will be addressed in the planning horizon (usually 12 to 18 months).  The APW also generates a projected schedule of activities and resource requirements as well as identifies project team members. Following the APW the implementation begins with project team training, specific subject matter expert training, process design, pilot implementation and full roll out.

Discrete Projects

Discrete reliability projects are usually shorter duration projects that are targeted towards a specific client requirement.  An example would be to conduct a Failure Modes and Effect Analysis on a production line or troublesome asset. Perhaps it is facilitation of a Root Cause Analysis investigation.  Discrete projects are often provided to help clients get a handle on the accuracy of their asset database by conducting a walk down of installed assets and “cleaning up” the CMMS database, or perhaps conducting an independent evaluation of repair parts inventories. Other assistance may be in providing workshops in leadership & management. All of the discrete projects are customized to client needs, and aligned with the Organizational Reliability Model

The Organizational Reliability Model

Starting at the bottom of the model, we have the Control & Stability Realm. This is the most basic area and the area that enables the Proactive Reliability Realm.

Control & Stability is the establishment of a good work management process.  Work management is enabled by having the capability to perform (foundation), the documented policies and procedures to perform (process) and having managers and supervisors that direct performance (focus & execution).

A major part of establishing control and stability is having managers and supervisors that understand their role and know when to exert their leadership to ensure organizational objectives are met.

When the Control & Stability elements are in place and functioning well we are able to collect data and generate information from our activities.

Org Reliability Model 2009

The top of the model is referred to as the Proactive Reliability Realm which is a continuous improvement process. From consistent processes in the Control & Stability Realm we are able to prioritize opportunities for improvement.

Proactive Reliability is based on using tools such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Reliability Centered Maintenance, Root Cause Analysis, Weibull Analysis, LEAN and Six Sigma to optimize reliability while maintaining or reducing total working capital requirements.

Reliability in Design is used when initiating or updating physical design or operating procedures.  Reliability in Operation is the use of precision and predictive techniques to assure highest possible reliability of assets.  Reliability Improvement Process is the selection of opportunities for improvement.
